Apple humiliated Google again! 800 million people use Google RCS, but not including iPhone users

On May 11th, Google held the 2023 I/O Developer Conference today and announced many new things for Android and Pixel products. In its keynote speech, Google reiterated that Apple did not provide support for the RCS (Rich Communication Suite) messaging protocol on the iPhone.

RCS is a new open messaging standard created by Google to replace SMS messages. Although Google has been promoting RCS for every Android user, Apple seems to have never been open to the idea of adopting RCS on iOS because Apple already has iMessage, which is its alternative SMS solution and can only be used on Apple devices.

Apple's rejection of RCS ultimately affects the dialogue between iPhone and Android users using their respective devices' default messaging applications. At today's I/O conference, Google stated that over 800 million people worldwide are using RCS services.

Last year, when a customer asked RCS that she was unable to send certain videos to her mother because she was using an Android phone, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, "You can buy your mother an iPhone. Cook also stated that he did not see Apple users demanding a "significant amount of effort" for this. Allowing iPhone users to send RCS may ultimately harm iPhone sales in the United States, where iMessage is very popular.

Introducing RCS into iPhone will bring many benefits to users - not only the interoperability between iOS and Android, but also because RCS has end-to-end encryption messages, while SMS does not. However, according to a Bloomberg report in December 2022, Apple still has no plans to adopt RCS in its devices.
