While Google officially unveiled the Tensor G4 at the Pixel 9 launch event, specific data regarding its performance or energy efficiency remains elusive, leading to speculation that it might be a minor upgrade over the Tensor G3. However, Google has different plans for the next-generation Tensor G5. Reports suggest that Google will leverage TSMC's second-generation 3nm process, aiming for a 2025 launch for the Tensor G5.

Further reports indicate that Tensor G5 will utilize TSMC's InFO-POP packaging technology, a technology also employed in Apple's A17 Pro chipset. InFO-POP packaging boasts advantages such as reduced chip size and lower power consumption.

Previous reports suggested that Tensor G5 has already completed its production run, implying that the chipset design is finalized, leaving Google to entrust the design to TSMC for mass production on their advanced 3nm process.

Furthermore, next year's Pixel 10 series will also benefit from TSMC's InFO-POP packaging technology. This packaging technology has been utilized in chips such as the A17 Pro in iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, as well as the S9 in Apple Watch Series 9. Reports indicate that Tensor G5 will adopt this technology, enabling Google to reduce the board space occupied by the upcoming SoC, while also lowering its height for improved thermal efficiency. The reduced size will free up valuable space for accommodating other components.

Assuming Google sticks to a 6.3-inch display size for the base Pixel 10, even a few millimeters saved in space can translate to a substantial benefit.

Tensor G5 is anticipated to feature a custom CPU and GPU, mirroring Apple's approach from several years ago. This shift will grant Google greater control over software and hardware integration. Not to mention, the upgraded neural engine will significantly enhance the capabilities of the Gemini AI assistant. This also implies that Tensor G5 will ultimately bridge the gap with rivals in terms of performance and efficiency.
