Samsung's First Titanium Folding Phone: W25/Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim to Feature Stronger, Lighter Material

According to Korean media outlet TheElec, the Samsung W25 (sold domestically) and Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim (sold in Korea) will feature titanium, marking the first time Samsung has used the material in a foldable phone.

The report suggests that Samsung has contacted multiple suppliers and is considering using either stainless steel or titanium for the back panel of the Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim. If they choose titanium, it will be the first Samsung foldable to use this material.

It's worth noting that the original Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Fold2 used stainless steel for their back panels. However, starting with the Galaxy Z Fold3 and subsequent models, they switched to carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) to accommodate the S Pen (digital converter that recognizes handwriting, and the metal back panel would interfere with its recognition).

The W25/Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim does not support the S Pen, so there's no concern about metal interfering with it, allowing Samsung to use metal for the back panel again.

Employing titanium as the back panel material is not as simple as it might seem, compared to stainless steel. Titanium is stronger and lighter than stainless steel, but it's also more difficult to work with.

Titanium's strength-to-weight ratio is one of its greatest advantages. It's as strong as steel but has a lower density, meaning that it's lighter while maintaining the same strength. This has made titanium the material of choice for aerospace, medical devices, watches, and other industries.

Titanium's use in the mobile phone industry is also becoming increasingly common. In recent years, companies like Apple and Huawei have launched phones featuring titanium to emphasize their high-end positioning and exceptional performance.

Samsung's choice of titanium for the W25/Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim reflects their appreciation for its advantages, hoping to provide users with a stronger and lighter experience.

This news has also sparked considerable interest within the industry. Some analysts believe that Samsung's choice of titanium signifies that their exploration of materials for foldable phones has entered a new phase. In the future, as titanium processing technology continues to advance, we expect more manufacturers to opt for it as the material for foldable phones.

However, some industry professionals point out that the cost of titanium is higher than stainless steel, potentially leading to a higher price for the W25/Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim. Nonetheless, it's undeniable that using titanium will enhance the quality and performance of foldable phones, delivering a superior user experience.

In summary, Samsung's adoption of titanium in the W25/Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim represents not only a technological breakthrough for their foldable phones but also a new direction for the exploration of materials in foldable phone technology. As titanium processing technology matures, we can expect to see more foldable phones featuring titanium in the future.
