From "Designed in California, Assembled in China" to "Designed in California, Assembled in India": Apple

"Designed in California, Assembled in China" has been a familiar phrase on iPhone packaging since the device was launched in 2007. However, in recent years, Apple has embarked on a strategic initiative to shift some iPhone production to India. As the iPhone 16 series launches, India's role in Apple's supply chain is set to become even more significant.

According to Bloomberg, Apple will manufacture its high-end iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models in India for the first time this year. To meet the expected high demand, Foxconn has begun training thousands of workers at its factory in Tamil Nadu, southern India. In addition to Foxconn, other Apple partners like Wistron and Tata Group are also involved in production in India, further solidifying India's position in Apple's global supply chain.

iPhone production in India is not just a publicity stunt. Bloomberg reports that in the fiscal year ending March 2024, Apple assembled iPhones worth approximately $14 billion in India, a significant milestone that indicates Apple's intention to put India on the fast track, exporting most of the India-made iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models to the US, Europe, and the Middle East.

Despite India's growing role in Apple's supply chain, China remains the top producer of Apple products, including iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks. Reports suggest that Foxconn started hiring 50,000 new workers in China a few weeks ago to ramp up production of the iPhone 16 and is investing heavily in building new assembly facilities. Additionally, a large number of iPhone components are still manufactured in China and then exported to India, potentially increasing transportation costs in the overall price of the iPhone.

Apple's decision to produce iPhones in India has two major advantages. First, it diversifies the supply chain, reducing dependence on China, a move that could potentially mitigate the impact of geopolitical tensions on Apple's operations. Second, it is expected to narrow the price gap for local consumers in India, making Apple's high-end products more accessible.

If you're planning to buy an iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max, there's a good chance the new device will bear the inscription "Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in India." This change reflects Apple's ongoing supply chain strategy adjustments and signifies India's further rise in the global tech industry.
