On September 3rd, Norway reported record-breaking electric car sales in August, with Tesla Model Y topping the charts. Data released on Monday by the Norwegian Automobile Federation (OFV) revealed that 11,114 new vehicles were sold in August, of which approximately 94% were electric cars. This remarkable growth is attributed to Norway's generous tax incentives for electric cars, along with benefits like access to bus lanes and parking discounts.
Oyvind Solberg Thorsen, head of OFV, commented, "If this trend continues, we are on track to reach our goal of 100% zero-emission cars by 2025." He also noted a slight increase in overall car sales, suggesting that "people's financial situation has improved slightly."
According to OFV data, Tesla Model Y sold over 2,000 units in August, capturing 19% of the market share. Volvo EX30 sold 932 units during the same period, while Skoda Enyaq pure electric SUV surpassed 700 units.
OFV further reported that diesel and gasoline cars accounted for only 2% of total sales in August. As of August, electric vehicles have captured nearly 87% of new passenger car sales.
Norway's electric car promotion policies have been remarkably successful, providing a valuable blueprint for other countries. With continuous technological advancements and cost reductions, the global electric car market is expected to flourish.
