The Rise of Domestic Screens: BOE Poised to Become Mainstream, Samsung Display's Dominance in Jeopardy?

Once upon a time, Samsung Display's screens were synonymous with high-end quality. Domestic flagship phones eagerly adopted them, with some brands even proudly touting the debut of Samsung Display's latest screen technology as a major selling point. However, over the past three years, Samsung Display's screens have noticeably lost their allure, replaced by the burgeoning rise of domestic screens.

On September 4th, industry insider "Digital Chat Station" revealed that the OnePlus 13 will be the first to feature BOE's X2 Dongfang screen, set to launch next month. Even more surprisingly, a slew of flagship models, including the Huawei Mate X series, vivo X200 series, OPPO Find X8 series, iQOO 13, realme GT7 Pro, Honor Magic7 series, and Huawei Mate 70 series, are all slated to utilize BOE screens. This signifies a potential explosion in BOE screen adoption next month, a scenario unimaginable just three years ago.

Three years ago, these very same models almost universally relied on Samsung Display screens, with only a handful utilizing BOE displays. Now, the surge of domestic screens threatens to unravel Samsung Display's long-held monopoly.

While "Digital Chat Station" notes that some models will incorporate screens from other domestic manufacturers like Visionox and Tianma, these companies lack the brand recognition and consumer trust enjoyed by BOE.

Interestingly, OnePlus will prioritize the launch of its second-generation Dongfang screen next month, rather than the OnePlus 13 itself. This seems to have become a pattern for OnePlus, ever since its initial use of Samsung's 90Hz refresh rate screen.

Meanwhile, the Xiaomi 15 series and Redmi K80 series have opted for custom-made screens from Huaxing Optoelectronics, a practice that has become standard for Xiaomi.

Despite the undeniable rise of domestic screens, Samsung Display shouldn't be too concerned. Boasting Apple as a mega-client, coupled with its own Samsung smartphone usage, Samsung Display's screen technology remains ahead of its domestic counterparts.

Nevertheless, the surge of domestic screens is undeniably exciting. In the realm of smartphones, where three core technologies screens, camera sensors, etc. are essential, domestic manufacturers have caught up with giants like Samsung Display and Sony. The only remaining deficit lies in integrated SoCs, a challenge we believe can be overcome in the future.

The future of domestic smartphones is no longer dependent on the supply chains of the US, Japan, and South Korea. Instead, a new era awaits, one where we possess core technologies and wield independent voices.
