Apple is reportedly set to release two new AirPods 4 models at its upcoming iPhone 16 launch event. Both models are said to feature USB-C charging and audio upgrades, with one variant also incorporating a speaker in its charging case.
Apple has reportedly been mass producing replacements for the current AirPods 3 since March 2024, with expectations that the new models would launch alongside the iPhone 16. Bloomberg reports that Apple will release two versions of the AirPods 4, replacing the current AirPods 3 and Apple's still-sold older AirPods 2.
Both models are said to offer a similar sound quality to the current AirPods Pro, featuring USB-C charging cases. However, the higher-end version's case will include a speaker that can reportedly make it easier to locate the earbuds using the "Find My" feature. This version will also include noise cancellation, said to be comparable to the current AirPods Pro.
Apple has reportedly found and fixed a battery drain issue with the new AirPods, so this shouldn't affect their release at the September 9th event. However, Apple's hearing health feature codenamed "Yodel" is reportedly delayed. These features include turning AirPods into hearing aids and offering hearing tests. Yodel features may be announced at the iPhone 16 event, but it's uncertain at this time, as reports indicate development delays. These features are likely to launch later.
Meanwhile, Apple is also reportedly preparing an update to its AirPods Pro, with a new design and improved noise cancellation. This model is expected to launch in early 2025. Apple is also working on an update to the AirPods Max. While the release date is currently unknown, it's speculated that the update will include a USB-C port and new color options.
Besides the iPhone 16 itself, Apple's "It'sGlowtime" event is also expected to include AirPods and Apple Watch announcements.
