AppleIntelligence Delay Casts Doubt on iPhone 16 "Super Cycle"

Renowned tech journalist Mark Gurman has reported that Apple has decided to delay the rollout of key AppleIntelligence features, potentially jeopardizing the anticipated "super cycle" fueled by the iPhone 16.

Gurman details the postponed AppleIntelligence functionalities:

  • ChatGPT Integration Pushback: Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI in June, but ChatGPT integration into AppleIntelligence is now expected to arrive later this year. This delay also affects Apple's planned Siri overhaul, which involved introducing more personalized, contextualized chat functionalities. Those features are now pushed back to next year.
  • AI Image Generation and Custom Emoji Delay: Apple's planned AI image generation tool "ImagePlayground" and AI custom emoji feature "Genmoji" are now scheduled for release in December with iOS 18.2.
  • Initial AppleIntelligence Features: While the initial AppleIntelligence functions will be available with iOS 18.1, the update won't be released alongside the new iPhones in September. Instead, iOS 18.1 is slated for a public release in October. These initial features include new writing tools for generating and summarizing text, suggested replies in iMessage, automatic call transcription, and cleanup features in the "Photos" app. However, Gurman warns that even these basic functionalities might not be available in China and the European Union.

Overall, AppleIntelligence's evolution into a "complete package" will be a gradual and staggered process. Gurman suggests that Apple's strategy stems from the perceived lack of compelling AI features to drive upgrade cycles. Instead, Apple is focusing on promoting the iPhone's hardware changes, including a new photo capture button and customizable action buttons.

Beyond the AI feature delays and consumer skepticism towards AI, Gurman highlights the limited visual changes in the upcoming iPhones compared to their predecessors. This further weakens consumer appeal. While many analysts anticipate a wave of upgrades driven by the iPhone 16 featuring AppleIntelligence, Gurman predicts that the "super cycle" is more likely to occur with the iPhone 17, which will boast a more complete AI suite and potentially a fresh design.

The delayed AppleIntelligence features and the minimal design changes in the iPhone 16 could significantly impact the phone's market performance. Despite Apple's continued investments in AI, short-term, AI features might not be the primary iPhone 16 selling point. Whether consumers will upgrade for AppleIntelligence and whether Apple can deliver more captivating AI features with the iPhone 17 next year will be crucial factors influencing the future trajectory of the iPhone market.
