Apple has recently indicated that the upcoming iPhone 16 series will feature a new internal design to accommodate larger batteries, improve thermal performance, and simplify battery repair procedures. This design change may help Apple comply with the European Union's new regulations regarding the repairability of electronic devices.

While Apple has not detailed the specific design changes in their press releases for the iPhone 16 Pro series, they mentioned that these models will employ a titanium design, a new generation of Ceramic Shield, and a novel mechanical structure for enhanced thermal performance and efficiency, achieving up to a 20% improvement.

Previously, technology news outlet TheInformation reported that Apple will introduce a new battery replacement method for the iPhone 16 series to meet EU requirements. These regulations mandate that smartphone manufacturers ensure batteries can be easily replaced by users using simple tools like screwdrivers and pry bars, even for non-removable batteries. Although the specific battery replacement method for the iPhone 16 series remains unconfirmed due to the upcoming release, we can anticipate the emergence of relevant teardown videos.

TheInformation also revealed that Apple will use a more easily detachable adhesive. Compared to the previously used, difficult-to-remove adhesive, this new method might involve an electro-inductive detachment technique, simplifying the battery replacement process.

It is noteworthy that the EU has recently enacted the "New Battery Regulation," establishing new requirements for battery recycling rates and carbon footprints. The regulation outlines a target recycling rate of 51% for traction batteries by 2028 and 61% by 2031. For portable batteries, the target recycling rate is set at 45% in 2023, 63% in 2027, and 73% in 2030. Furthermore, the regulation mandates that rechargeable industrial and traction batteries with a capacity exceeding 2kWh must provide carbon footprint declarations and labels. Companies are obligated to collect and calculate carbon emissions throughout the battery's lifecycle, including stages like raw materials, production, transportation, end-of-life, and recycling.

The "New Battery Regulation" also necessitates the inclusion of a battery passport by 2026 for traction batteries, containing information such as battery capacity, performance, usage, chemical composition, and recyclable materials. This passport is essential for selling these batteries in the European region.

Apple's move undoubtedly reflects a proactive response to EU regulations and aligns with the trend of sustainability in electronic products. By refining internal design, enhancing battery repairability, and utilizing more eco-friendly adhesives, Apple is actively working towards reducing electronic waste and extending product lifespan. As consumers increasingly demand sustainability and product repairability, Apple's initiatives will likely become an industry trend, setting new directions for the future of electronic devices.
