Is Nokia Making a Comeback with Modularity? Can HMD's New Fusion Phone Break the Curse?

HMD Fusion was officially released earlier this month and is now available for purchase on HMD's website in Europe. The phone is priced at 269.99 (6GB RAM and 128GB storage) or 299.99 (8GB RAM and 256GB storage). The biggest highlight of HMD Fusion is its modular design it comes with what they call "Fusionoutfits," which are essentially interchangeable shells that can add features like wireless charging, more rugged protection, a ring light, and more to the phone.

HMD isn't the first company to try modularity with their products, but previous attempts haven't been successful, which isn't a good sign for HMD, but maybe they will be the exception. The first-party Fusion accessories will be released in phases between October and December this year, so consumers can only buy the phone itself for now. It's worth mentioning that HMD also provides a Fusion development kit, allowing users to 3D print their own designs, which opens up more possibilities for personalized customization.

HMD Fusion features a 6.56-inch IPS LCD screen with an HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. It's equipped with a 108MP main camera and a 50MP front-facing camera. It has a 5000mAh battery with 33W wired charging and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chipset.

The phone's design is fairly simple, but its modular design gives users more freedom and personalization options. The concept of modularity itself is very appealing, allowing users to choose different accessories based on their needs and create a unique phone. It remains to be seen whether HMD Fusion can achieve market success with its modular design in the future.
