The iPhone 16 Pro's Camera Button: Innovation or Gimmick?

Rumors about a new camera button on the iPhone have been circulating since June this year. At the time, many, myself included, dismissed it as a joke, a tired feature rehashed from Android manufacturers that Apple was somehow making seem groundbreaking. But then, Apple formally announced the feature and explained its purpose, and I knew my initial thoughts were right: Apple was scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Now, with the iPhone 16 series officially launched, I've gotten my hands on an iPhone 16 Pro. While our team is conducting objective tests on its performance, camera capabilities, cooling, and more, this piece focuses on the much-hyped camera button, analyzing its supposed "interaction revolution."

Visually Appealing, But Awkward to Use

 The iPhone 16 Pro

First and foremost, I have to admit that Apple has a knack for aesthetics. This new camera button isn't just a simple functional button like those found on Android phones. It seamlessly integrates with the frame, practically disappearing. To distinguish it from the power button, Apple cleverly covered it with sapphire glass, offering a pleasant touch experience.

However, the iPhone 16 Pro I received might have some quality control issues. Every time I "touch" the button from the frame, it feels slightly sharp, which is even more noticeable when using a third-party case.

Speaking of cases, this is another point worth mentioning. Since current third-party cases haven't caught up with Apple's new button design, they resort to simply cutting out a hole for it. This cheap workaround makes using the camera button even more awkward.

Before delving into the actual experience, let's clarify that the iPhone 16 camera button isn't a physical button at all. It's a capacitive touch sensor covered in sapphire glass, paired with a sophisticated sensor and haptic engine for feedback. Think of it as a spiritual successor to the iPhone 7's capacitive Home button (though its implementation is entirely different).

Confused Logic, An Unfinished Product?

 The iPhone 16 Pro

Initially, I thought the camera button was decent, not groundbreaking but not unusable. But then I opened the camera app and encountered a truly perplexing user experience, something Ive never encountered in any Apple product before.

 The iPhone 16 Pro

With the default settings, tapping the button brings you directly to the camera interface, complete with a smooth animation, which is very Apple-like.

Within the camera interface, tapping the button takes a photo, while long-pressing enters video recording mode. The duration of the recording depends on how long you press the button. At first glance, this logic seems sound. However, when you need to record for an extended period, the button becomes a liability. You have to constantly hold it down, and after about 10 seconds, it starts to feel uncomfortable, rendering it impractical for longer recordings.

Another issue arises when you long-press the button for half a second. Instead of taking photos, it switches to zoom control, allowing you to adjust the zoom level by sliding your finger on the button. This feature is undeniably useful, especially for one-handed shooting. But the seamless transition between zoom, exposure compensation, and depth of field adjustment as shown in Apple's presentation is practically impossible. Every time you want to switch functions, you must quickly tap the button twice without taking your finger off it, which is extremely difficult. If you lift your finger or dont tap quickly enough, switching fails to work.

But it doesnt end there. Lets say you've already framed your shot and adjusted the zoom level, but now need to lower the exposure. You must first quickly double-tap the button to return to the settings menu, then find the exposure compensation option and tap it once to adjust. This entire process is not only clumsy but also time-consuming, potentially causing you to miss the perfect shot. Someone might argue that you could simply press the shutter button instead, but if this is the case, what purpose does the camera button serve? (Perhaps it can be used to quickly wake up the camera).

Additionally, you may have noticed that all these actions were performed in landscape mode. But have you ever considered how the button works in portrait mode? Here's the answer: it remains the same. For example, when zooming using the camera button in landscape mode, sliding down increases the zoom level, while sliding up decreases it. This logic makes sense. However, when you rotate the phone to portrait mode and repeat the same action, the logic remains unchanged. This is counterintuitive, as sliding down is generally associated with decreasing, not increasing, magnification.

Furthermore, using the camera button in portrait mode feels incredibly awkward, especially on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, where the center of gravity is slightly higher. Placing your thumb on the camera button results in a noticeable tilt of the phone backwards.

Overall, I enjoyed the one-touch photo and video recording features. The zoom slider isn't as necessary. And instead of features like depth of field adjustment and shooting style switching, I would have preferred a faster shutter speed and ISO controls, which would significantly improve the experience for users like me who enjoy photography.

In conclusion, it's evident that Apple aims to make iPhone photography more professional and personalized. However, the current iteration falls far short of the mark. Trying to integrate multiple controls onto a single button is inherently flawed, and even Apple hasn't found a better solution. In contrast, Android flagships offer a plethora of settings adjustments directly within the camera interface, which is truly practical rather than cramming everything into a single menu.

If Apple could unlock the button's full potential, such as switching songs/adjusting volume while listening to music, changing filters/music in TikTok, or controlling the video progress bar on certain streaming platforms, it might hold some value. But as stands now, I am not optimistic about the camera button's future. Its user experience falls drastically short of expectations.

Innovation for Innovation's Sake, Meaningless

Finally, returning to the initial question, is the iPhone 16 camera button a truly groundbreaking innovation? In a way, yes, it is. It's a clear visual marker that instantly distinguishes your phone as the latest model. However, from a practical and functional perspective, it's simply innovation for innovation's sake. At least for me, it doesn't offer any advantages.

The irony is that the iPhone was once the gold standard in mobile technology, but in recent years, it has been surpassed by Android flagships. Even the vaunted A-series chips are now lagging behind Snapdragon and Dimensity processors due to thermal limitations, leaving Apple with only its ecosystem and iOS as its main selling points against Android.

Its true that the iPhone 16 series might not offer much appeal to users with iPhone 15 and iPhone 14, but for those with older models, the upgraded features and competitive price point make it worth considering. If you want to get your hands on the latest iPhone, ordering through online services like Ele.me is a great option, as you can receive your new device within 30 minutes, and avail yourself of services like installment payments, sealed packaging, and dedicated delivery.
