Although the iPhone 16 series has just been released, rumors about the next-generation iPhone 17 series are already circulating. On Thursday, display industry analyst Ross Young posted on the social media platform X, suggesting that next year's iPhone 17 Pro will feature under-display fingerprint recognition technology (FaceID). This change could potentially extend to the iPhone 17 Pro Max as well.

Rumors of under-display FaceID technology have persisted for years, but they have never been confirmed. However, Young has a good track record of predicting display-related information for upcoming Apple products, including being the first to reveal that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max would have larger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays respectively. If he says the iPhone 17 Pro will have under-display FaceID, it increases the likelihood of this feature being implemented.

Back in April 2023, Young shared a roadmap indicating that both iPhone 17 Pro models would utilize under-display FaceID, but he also mentioned that these devices would still have a small hole in the screen for the front camera. He predicted that a full under-display setup, including FaceID and the front camera, wouldn't be available until the iPhone 19 Pro series, three years from now.

With under-display FaceID, the top of the iPhone 17 Pro display could potentially feature only one hole, similar to recent Android smartphones from Samsung and Google. However, there are currently no rumors regarding specific design alterations.

Another question remains: Will under-display FaceID keep the "Dynamic Island" alive? The "Dynamic Island" is the dynamic area on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max that integrates the front camera and sensors and can display notifications, shortcuts, and other information. If FaceID is hidden under the screen, the reason for the "Dynamic Island" might be questioned.

With a year to go until the iPhone 17 series launch, we have ample time to learn more about the rumors, which should give us more exciting insights into the future.
