New rumors about the upcoming iPhone 17 series point to a display technology upgrade. Ross Young of DisplaySupplyChainConsultants has revealed that the standard iPhone 17 and the rumored "iPhone 17 Air," a thinner model, will both feature ProMotion technology. This means both devices will be able to dynamically adjust their refresh rate to 120Hz when needed, resulting in smoother scrolling and video playback.
ProMotion, beyond offering a higher refresh rate, allows the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air displays to drop their refresh rate to more power-efficient levels. The iPhone 13 Pro could go down to 10Hz, while the iPhone 14 Pro to iPhone 16 Pro can even reach as low as 1Hz, enabling an always-on display feature that shows various lock screen elements even when the device is locked. It remains unclear whether the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will drop to 10Hz or 1Hz.
It's worth noting that the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, currently shipping, still feature 60Hz displays.
