Additionally, another notable departure this year was Andrej Karpathy, who previously served as the Head of AI at Tesla. He rejoined OpenAI in 2022 but left in February 2024 to establish Eureka Lab, an AI startup focused on education.

OpenAI's Future

OpenAI's latest round of funding coincides with a pivotal moment in the company's transition to a for-profit entity. Elon Musk, one of the company's initial founders, provided $45 million in early funding. However, after Musk parted ways with OpenAI, Altman transformed the company into a capped-profit entity governed by a board not directly accountable to investors.
