Global Smartphone Market Rebounds: Apple Sees Strong Growth, Xiaomi Holds Third Place, Vivo Returns to Top Five
The global smartphone market continued to recover in the third quarter of 2024. The latest report released by IDC shows that global smartphone shipments reached 316.1 million units, a 4.0% year-over-year increase, marking five consecutive quarters of year-over-year growth.
According to the report, Samsung topped the list with 57.8 million shipments, representing a market share of 18.3%. However, this figure reflects a 2.8% year-over-year decline. Close behind was Apple, with shipments of 56 million units and a market share of 17.7%, representing a 3.5% year-over-year increase. Notably, Apple narrowly missed overtaking Samsung to become the global leader this quarter, indicating that its market performance surpassed expectations.
Xiaomi secured third place with 42.8 million shipments, accounting for a market share of 13.5%, a 3.3% year-over-year increase. Xiaomi's shipments significantly surpassed those of OPPO and vivo, which ranked fourth and fifth, by 14 million and 15 million units respectively, showcasing its strong market competitiveness.
OPPO and vivo shipped 28.8 million and 27 million units respectively, achieving market shares of 9.1% and 8.5%, with year-over-year growth rates of 5.9% and 22.8%. Among them, vivo witnessed the most remarkable growth, and its strong momentum propelled it back into the global top five.
Overall, among the top five brands, only Samsung experienced a year-over-year decline, while the remaining four brands achieved positive growth. Vivo's impressive growth is particularly notable, enabling its return to the top five global positions.
Apple's market performance this quarter was particularly eye-catching. Despite the third quarter usually being the most challenging for Apple due to the iPhone 16 series launch in September, with only ten days of iPhone 16 sales in the third quarter, Apple not only came close to securing the top spot globally but also achieved year-over-year growth. Industry analysts have pointed out that Apple's market share this quarter reached a new historical high, suggesting that iPhone sales worldwide haven't declined as significantly as in the domestic market.
Xiaomi's data this quarter once again confirms its robust market performance, as it has consistently ranked among the top three globally for several quarters. Its shipments significantly outpaced those of OPPO and vivo, which rank fourth and fifth, demonstrating its strong market competitiveness.
In summary, the global smartphone market exhibited positive growth in the third quarter of 2024, and competition between the main brands has intensified. Apple's strong growth, Xiaomi's stable third-place position, and vivo's return to the top five all indicate the complexity and volatility of the future market landscape.
