With costs soaring, the new generation of Snapdragon flagship chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen4 (officially named Snapdragon 8 Supreme Edition), is poised to become the most expensive phone SoC ever, pushing up prices for numerous Chinese flagship phones. According to renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from TF International Securities, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen4 boasts the highest unit price and profit margin among its smartphone SoCs this year.
Reports reveal that the individual cost of the Snapdragon 8 Gen4 will reach $180 (approximately 1,281 yuan), signifying a 15% increase. This surge is primarily attributed to its adoption of the cutting-edge 3nm process technology, known for its high research and development costs.
Despite its high price, the Snapdragon 8 Gen4 remains projected to enjoy significant shipment volume this year. Kuo estimates that the majority of Snapdragon 8 Gen4 shipments will occur in Q4, registering a 50% year-over-year growth compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen3, reaching 9 million units.
Beyond the extended shipment timeframe, the Snapdragon 8 Gen4's substantial shipment increase is also spurred by factors like Samsung's heightened demand, recent growth in China's smartphone market share, the rise of high-end phone penetration, and the resurgence of smartphone shipments.
As the primary cost driver for flagship phones, the price hike for the Snapdragon 8 Gen4 is bound to pressure Chinese flagship phones to follow suit. Wang Teng, Xiaomi's Deputy General Manager for China Market and General Manager of the Redmi Brand, attributes the price increases for flagship phones this year to two key factors: the flagship processor's upgrade to the latest 3nm process, significantly elevating manufacturing costs, and the sustained price hikes in memory over the past year, reaching a peak. Consequently, large-memory versions are experiencing more substantial price increases.
It's quite challenging to determine the pricing for flagship phones at the end of the year. Every excellent product deserves recognition," Wang Teng remarked.
The price increase for the Snapdragon 8 Gen4 will have a profound impact on the entire smartphone market. On one hand, it will inevitably lead to higher prices for Chinese flagship phones. On the other hand, it might push phone manufacturers to prioritize product innovation and user experience to entice consumers.
This scenario presents a critical juncture for consumers, necessitating a careful balance between price and performance to find the most suitable phone.
It's noteworthy that this isn't the first instance of a price surge for flagship phones in the smartphone market. Over the past few years, flagship phone prices have been steadily climbing due to escalating component costs, increased research and development investments, and other factors.
However, the price increase for the Snapdragon 8 Gen4 is more pronounced, signifying more formidable challenges ahead for the smartphone market. Phone manufacturers must intensify their efforts to control costs and enhance product competitiveness to maintain their footing in this highly competitive market.
Consumers, too, should adopt a more rational approach to spending, selecting phones that best meet their needs rather than blindly pursuing high-priced flagships.
