OpenAI to Release New AI Agent

On November 14th, it was reported that OpenAI, the US-based artificial intelligence startup, is preparing to release a new AI agent codenamed "Operator." According to two sources familiar with the matter, the agent will be able to complete tasks for users on their computers, such as writing code or booking travel, without their direct supervision.

OpenAI management reportedly announced the plan at an employee meeting on Wednesday. They said they will release a research preview of the tool in January next year and make it available to developers through an API (application programming interface). OpenAI has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The release plan comes as the industry accelerates its development of AI agents. AI agents are a type of AI software capable of completing multi-step tasks with minimal user supervision. Previously, Anthropic, an AI company, released a similar agent that can process information on user computers in real-time and take actions on their behalf. Microsoft, OpenAI's investor, recently released a set of intelligent tools to help employees send emails and manage records. Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is also reportedly preparing to release an AI agent.

According to three sources familiar with the matter, OpenAI is working on multiple AI agent-related research projects. The most advanced of these is expected to be a general-purpose tool capable of performing tasks in web browsers.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, hinted at the company's shift towards AI agents in a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session last month. Altman said, Well have progressively more advanced models, but I think the next big jump is going to be [with] agents.

OpenAI and its competitors have invested heavily in developing more advanced AI models, but the returns on those investments are starting to diminish. With the release of "Operator," OpenAI seeks to open up a new direction in the AI field and push agent technology to new heights.
