Currently in a "research preview" phase, Operator is only available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers in the US (a $200 monthly subscription), indicating the product is still under testing and optimization, and may contain bugs or issues. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap, in an interview, stated Operator's goal is to save users time by automating common tasks, highlighting the "massive potential" for automation in both home and workplace settings. However, OpenAI is prioritizing its most engaged users, those better equipped to understand and accept the product's research preview status. Lightcap noted, "This represents a fundamental shift in how people interact with computers. It's a huge technological challenge, and the key measure of success is real-world utility."

To facilitate access to partner company websites, OpenAI has collaborated with technology companies including Instacart, Uber, eBay, Priceline, OpenTable, and Etsy, providing quick access links through Operator's home page. Lightcap clarified that these partnerships involve no financial agreements. Operator's launch marks OpenAI's official entry into the fiercely competitive AI agent market, where commercial software giants like Microsoft, Salesforce, and Workday have already launched their own AI agents capable of tasks such as report writing, lead generation, and candidate screening. Google and AI startup Anthropic have also recently released similar products.

In this competitive market, user scale is a critical competitive advantage. With a reported 300 million weekly active users for ChatGPT and over 1 million paid enterprise customers announced last fall, OpenAI possesses a vast user base that provides a significant advantage for Operator's reach, serving as a core competitive strength. OpenAI also acknowledges potential misuse risks, such as creating deceptive websites, users attempting to trick the AI agent, and "prompt injection" attacks. These attacks could lead to users revealing sensitive information or sending funds to malicious websites. To mitigate these risks, Operator features a "takeover mode," mandating manual user completion when payment information or login credentials are required. Operator also proactively requests user confirmation before high-risk actions (like sending emails). Furthermore, Operator will not engage in banking transactions or employment application decisions, and it will not utilize data previously shared with ChatGPT, protecting user privacy.

For OpenAI's partners, Operator offers significant benefits. For instance, Instacart's Chief Product Officer, Daniel Danker, stated, "We have no intention of building an AI agent ourselves." Operator provides Instacart with convenient access to its grocery delivery service, leveraging OpenAI's vast user base without the need for independent development of similar technology. Uber's Chief Product Officer, Sachin Kansal, similarly noted that the collaboration with OpenAI "provides an opportunity to guide product development."
