Quantum computing, with its unique ability to leverage qubits for computation, promises to solve complex problems intractable for traditional computers. Unlike classical computers using bits representing either "on" (1) or "off" (0), qubits can exist in both states simultaneously, enabling exponentially increased computational power. Fernando Brandao, Director of Applied Science at Amazon Web Services, and Oscar Painter, head of quantum hardware, noted in a blog post their belief in Ocelot's immense scaling potential, requiring only a tenth of the resources of traditional methods, significantly accelerating the arrival of practical quantum computing.

However, the commercialization of quantum computing hasn't been without its hurdles. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has funded quantum computing research for 20 years, yet penetration into consumer and enterprise markets remains slow. Peter Barrett, founder and general partner at Playground Global, attributes this primarily to the limited size of existing quantum chips. He points out that achieving reliable computation, even with some errors, requires millions of qubits.

Amazon's plans for building quantum chips were detailed by AWS Senior Vice President Peter DeSantis at the 2023 re:Invent conference in Las Vegas, with a promise of more details to come. Like Microsoft, Amazon is designing and manufacturing its quantum chips internally. Barrett notes that building a million-qubit system requires extensive collaboration with leading semiconductor manufacturers. Painter suggests that outsourcing some manufacturing to partners is a viable option as Amazon progresses in quantum hardware.

Public interest in quantum computing has grown significantly in recent years, particularly with more companies discussing how to build fault-tolerant qubits. Addressing error correction was a key design goal for Ocelot, an area where Google's Willow has also made progress. However, Painter estimates that quantum computers are still at least 10 years, or more, away from handling commercially viable computational tasks.

Predictions for the practical realization of quantum computing vary widely. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, at a January analyst meeting, suggested it might take 15 to 30 years. Meta's chief technology officer, Mark Zuckerberg, also believes it's at least a decade away. However, Intel's former CEO Pat Gelsinger is more optimistic, predicting practical quantum computing by 2030.
