On May 20th, IT Home reported that Microsoft has confirmed in its official support document that the Win11 system also has an ancient SATA issue,The drive letter of a mechanical hard drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD) will be displayed as removable media.

This issue can be traced back to subsequent versions of Windows Vista, including Win7, Win8, Win8.1, Win10, and Win11.

The official Microsoft support document attached to IT Home explains as follows:

reason

Whether a device is considered movable depends on the system's BIOS and how it labels the various SATA ports on the motherboard. The inbox driver directly checks the SATA port and considers devices connected to ports marked as "external" as removable devices. Not all storage drivers will perform this operation, which may cause damage or data loss.

resolvent

Firstly, check and install the BIOS updates provided by the computer manufacturer. If not available, you can follow these steps to replace the way the inbox driver displays devices on certain ports:

1. Open the Command Prompt with administrator privileges.

2. In the Command Prompt window, type the following command in Enter: devmgmt.msc

3. Under 'Disk Drives', right-click and select' Properties' to determine the SATA device that you want the inbox driver to consider for its internal and open properties.

4. Please note the bus number in the attribute overview of the following example, for example, the number in the figure below is 0.

For Windows 7:

At the previously opened Command Prompt, type the following command, and then press Enter:

Where x corresponds to the bus number recorded in step 4.

For Windows 8 and later versions:

Type the following command at a previously opened Command Prompt and press Enter:

Where x corresponds to the bus number recorded in step 4.
