On Thursday, May 26th, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated in a conversation with Ford CEO Jim Farley that Tesla may open some of its automotive operating system code to other automakers.

Musk said, "Just as Android has helped the mobile industry as a universal standard, we may open up more source code to help the automotive industry." If Tesla really takes this step, it will compete with Google and Apple, both of which have developed automotive operating systems based on Android and iOS.

Musk's above statement is in response to Farley's comment, which stated that building a "car with fully updatable software is extremely difficult". Musk stated that Tesla is willing to "provide assistance in software".

Tesla and Ford reached a milestone cooperation agreement on Thursday: Ford's electric vehicle customers will have access to Tesla's supercharging networks in the United States and Canada. More importantly, Ford agreed to integrate Tesla's charging interface into its second generation electric vehicles starting from 2025, including a truck and an SUV with three rows of seats.

Musk often reveals Tesla's ideas during on-site activities, some of which will eventually come true, while others will go nowhere. If Tesla really opens up its air upgrade software solution to other automakers, it will compete directly with Google and Apple.

Google provides car manufacturers with the Android Automotive OS, which is based on its open-source mobile operating system running on Linux and has been modified for use in cars. Last June, Apple also joined the development of automotive operating systems, announcing the goal of the next generation CarPlay to provide power for the entire dashboard of the car.

At the same time, these two technology giants also provide middleware products called AppleCarPlay and AndroidAuto, which can connect users' phones with the car's infotainment system. (Small)
