Tecno's New Tri-Folding Smartphone "Phantom Ultimate 2" Debuts, Challenging Huawei's Dominance in Foldable Phones?
Recently, Tecno, a brand under Transsion Holdings, released a promotional video for its tri-folding concept phone, "Phantom Ultimate 2," attracting widespread attention in the industry. This new device features a dual-hinge design, providing a 6.48-inch screen when folded, comparable to a traditional straight phone, while unfolding reveals a 10-inch 3K LTPO display, rivaling tablets.
The "Phantom Ultimate 2" promotional video showcases various screen suspension functionalities, including laptop mode, tent mode, and multitasking mode, offering a more flexible user experience. Moreover, Tecno emphasizes the phone's durability, claiming its screen hinge can withstand up to 300,000 folds, boasting a 2100MPa high-strength design effectively controlling crease issues.
It's worth noting that the "Phantom Ultimate 2" remains a concept phone, with specifications and release date yet to be announced. This means Huawei will still be the first to mass-produce a tri-folding phone. However, Tecno's "Phantom Ultimate 2" undoubtedly brings new competitiveness to the foldable market, further demonstrating the growing trend of foldable phones as the future of mobile devices.
Besides the "Phantom Ultimate 2," Tecno's two other new foldable phones Phantom VFold2 and Phantom Flip2 are scheduled for official release soon. Recent leaks suggest the Tecno Phantom VFold2, a horizontal folding phone, features a rectangular triple rear camera setup known as DECO, uses a side fingerprint unlock, and supports handwriting capabilities. It's expected to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ processor, house a 5610mAh battery, run on Android 14, and priced around 7537.07 yuan (approximately $1060) for the 12GB+512GB version.
The Tecno Phantom Flip2, on the other hand, is a vertical folding phone distinguished by its large secondary screen and integrated rear camera design with the panel. This device is expected to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8020 processor, feature a 4590mAh battery with 70W fast charging support, offer at least 8GB+256GB storage, and run on Android 14.
Looking at the specs, the Tecno Phantom VFold2 appears to have a more powerful configuration compared to the Tecno Phantom Flip2. Currently, both phones have received BIS certification, indicating their launch is imminent.
Tecno has consistently launched innovative products in recent years. This foray into the tri-folding phone market and the introduction of multiple foldable phones exemplify their proactive strategic positioning in the future mobile market. It's fascinating to observe how Tecno will compete against mobile giants like Huawei in the future.
