TCL Teams Up with Microsoft to Launch Nxtpaper Phones: Paper-Like Reading Experience Meets AI Capabilities

TCL unveiled two new Nxtpaper phones at IFA 2024: TCL 50 Pro Nxtpaper 5G and TCL 50 Nxtpaper 5G. Both phones feature TCL's latest Nxtpaper 3.0 display technology, which makes the screen look like paper, eliminating reflections and reducing eye strain.

Notably, TCL has partnered with Microsoft to bring unique features powered by Azure AI to Nxtpaper phones. The phones leverage Azure AI's large language models and automatic speech recognition to enable various functionalities. For instance, a writing assistant helps users quickly summarize texts, modify tone, record and transcribe voice notes, and translate selected text into multiple languages. All user data processed by these AI features is stored on European servers and will not be transferred elsewhere without user consent.

In terms of specifications, both phones are equipped with a 6.8-inch Nxtpaper display with a 2K resolution and an anti-fingerprint coating. They both run on the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chip, coupled with 8GB RAM and up to 512GB storage. Both phones also feature a large 5010mAh battery with support for 33W fast charging.

Both phones run Android 14 and are eligible for two major software updates. The TCL 50 Nxtpaper 5G boasts an 8MP selfie camera, while the 50 Pro offers a 32MP sensor. However, both models share the same rear camera setup, featuring a 108MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 2MP macro lens.

For easy display mode switching, a physical button has been added below the power button on the right side of the phone, allowing users to switch between normal, colored paper, and maximum ink mode with a single press.

The TCL 50 Pro Nxtpaper 5G is priced at 299 (approximately $310) and will be available in the EU and Latin America. The TCL 50 Nxtpaper 5G is priced at 229 (approximately $240) and will be available exclusively in the EU.

Both phones incorporate Nxtpaper technology, delivering a paper-like reading experience that effectively alleviates eye fatigue associated with prolonged reading. Additionally, the integration of Azure AI provides users with a more intelligent experience, encompassing features like a writing assistant, voice recognition, and more, further enhancing the phone's practicality.
