A Refreshed Design, a Return to Classic Elements

Compared to its predecessors, the iPhone 16 offers updated color options, introducing vibrant Pink, Teal, Black & White and Brown. Aside from color changes, the iPhone 16's rear camera layout has undergone a significant transformation, adopting a vertical arrangement reminiscent of the iPhone 12 from 2020.

While the return to a vertical rear camera layout might appear as an unexpected design element throwback by Apple, it is actually closely related to the spatial video experience offered by AppleVisionPro. The new camera arrangement is perfectly designed to support spatial video recording and viewing, delivering a more immersive experience for users.

Strong Performance, Comprehensive Upgrades

The iPhone 16 maintains the overall design of the iPhone 15, featuring a square frame, a rear glass surface that supports MagSafe wireless charging, a "Dynamic Island" cutout at the top for the front camera and FaceID sensor, and a USB-C charging/data port at the bottom. However, iPhone 16 boasts significant performance enhancements.

The iPhone 16s camera system also receives a major upgrade, equipped with two cameras: a primary wide-angle camera with 1x and 2x optical zoom; and an ultrawide camera with 0.5x zoom, featuring an improved f/2.2 aperture, significantly enhancing low-light photography.

Apple claims that the iPhone 16 employs the strongest glass in its current product line, effectively protecting the display from scratches.

The iPhone 16 will be the first base model phone from Apple to incorporate AppleIntelligence technology. AppleIntelligence is Apple's AI software system first previewed at WWDC, initially exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models. With the launch of the iPhone 16, AppleIntelligence will be widely available.

AppleIntelligence runs on-device using the A18 chip but can also leverage Apple's private cloud computing infrastructure to operate in the cloud. AppleIntelligence features will be gradually introduced over time, including new Genmoji and ImagePlaygrounds image generation capabilities, automatic notification prioritization, and the next generation of intelligent features for Siri.

Apple also announced the expansion of language support for AppleIntelligence, starting with American English, with support for more English dialects in December and additional languages planned for next year.

Apple will start taking pre-orders for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus on Friday, September 13, with shipments beginning a week later on September 20. The iPhone 16 starts at $799, while the iPhone 16 Plus starts at $899.
