Apple unveiled its highly anticipated iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro series on September 10th, but a notable trend persists: US models remain the only ones globally that don't come equipped with a SIM card tray.

Following the launch event, technology media outlet MacRumors investigated product pages for several countries and regions, including China, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Singapore. All of these regional product pages showcased devices featuring a SIM card tray.

Looking back, Apple first removed the SIM card tray from US iPhone 14 models in 2021, introducing an eSIM-only version. eSIMs are digital SIM cards that eliminate the need for physical nano-SIM cards to activate cellular network plans.

Apple has argued that eSIMs are more secure than physical SIM cards, as they can't be removed from a lost or stolen iPhone. They also pointed out that users can manage up to eight eSIMs within the iPhone's settings app, eliminating the hassle of acquiring, carrying, and swapping physical SIM cards while traveling.

As eSIMs gain traction, iPhones sold outside the US might eventually ditch the SIM card tray, though it's unclear when this shift might occur.
