Apple iOS 18 RC Version Introduces "Activation Lock" for iPhone Components, Targeting the Theft Market
Tech media outlet 9to5Mac today (September 13th) published a blog post reporting that Apple's iOS 18 RC version is introducing "Activation Lock" functionality for iPhone components. This means that not only are user accounts linked to the phone, but components like the battery, camera, and display screen will also have their own independent serial numbers linked.
Apple officially explains that the "Activation Lock" feature effectively prevents devices from falling into the wrong hands. Even if the device is remotely wiped, it blocks unauthorized reactivation. Simply keeping "Find My" enabled ensures maximum device security and increases the odds of retrieval.
Apple's goal is to completely eliminate the market for stolen iPhone components. Due to the existence of Activation Lock, most stolen phones are sold as parts on the gray market, which still holds significant value. However, in iOS 18 RC, when an iPhone detects the use of secondhand parts, it will require the original device owner's Apple account password.
It's reported that some users who attempted to swap components between iPhones running iOS 18.0 RC were met with prompts asking for the Apple account password to unlock and verify the components used. This undoubtedly increases the difficulty of stealing phone parts and significantly reduces the value of stolen phones.
The introduction of "Activation Lock" is undoubtedly a significant step by Apple in combating the theft market. It not only protects users' property security but also makes phone component trading more transparent, effectively striking at the gray market. As this feature is formally launched, it is expected to benefit more users, and the scale of the theft market will gradually shrink.
