In April, Apple announced improvements to iPhone repair processes, allowing customers and independent repair shops to utilize refurbished Apple parts for repairs. Recently, media outlet 9to5Mac reported that Apple's iOS 18 Release Candidate (RC) version introduced an "Activation Lock" feature for iPhone parts. This feature significantly enhances device security, preventing the trade of stolen iPhone parts.
Enabling the parts activation lock binds the user's Apple account not only to the current iPhone but also to individual serial numbers of parts like the battery, camera, and display. This means that even if the phone is lost or stolen, its parts cannot be easily reused.
If the iPhone detects parts from another device with Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled, it prompts the user to enter the original device owner's Apple account password. This implies that even if a thief acquires the phone's parts, they cannot be used on other devices, effectively curbing the circulation of stolen parts.
Testing revealed that swapping parts between iPhones running iOS 18.0 RC does require the Apple account password for unlocking and validating the components, confirming the functionality of this feature.
It's important to note that the parts activation lock is currently exclusive to iPhones, and iPads running iPadOS 18 do not support this feature yet.
The introduction of this new feature marks a significant step forward in Apple's commitment to device security. It not only effectively prevents the circulation of stolen iPhone parts but also safeguards user property, offering more comprehensive device protection.
