Samsung's Roll-Up Screen Phone: Challenging Huawei's Tri-Fold, Expected Release in 2025
After Huawei unveiled the world's first tri-fold screen phone, it quickly became the biggest highlight in the tech world, even overshadowing the hype surrounding the iPhone 16 series. With various manufacturers eager to enter the tri-fold field, Samsung has opted to combat this with its roll-up screen technology.
According to leaks, Samsung plans to launch its first roll-up screen phone in 2025, featuring a larger screen size than Huawei's tri-fold, reaching a maximum of 12.4 inches. Additionally, Samsung will incorporate an under-display camera technology to eliminate the screen punch-hole completely.
It's important to note that Samsung's roll-up screen development wasn't solely triggered by Huawei's tri-fold phone. As early as 2020, Samsung had already filed a patent for roll-up screen technology. The patent document reveals that Samsung has equipped the roll-up phone's case with two gears and a gear guide to control the screen's extension and retraction. The top and bottom of the phone also integrate a chain-like connection system, covered with a flexible metal foil material to prevent dust and dirt from entering and affecting the screen's expansion.
This technology allows the phone to change its surface area through sliding in and out, transforming the screen from phone-sized to mini-tablet-sized.
Compared to tri-fold screens, roll-up screens offer unique advantages:
- No Creases: Due to the lack of rigid folding, the roll-up screen is virtually entirely flat, eliminating the crease issue found on tri-fold screens.
- Fewer Gaps: Roll-up screens have fewer gaps in their body, theoretically offering higher security.
The launch of Samsung's roll-up screen will bring a new form factor to the phone market. In the future, a new competitive landscape will emerge between roll-up screens and tri-fold screens, providing more choices for users.
As technology continues to advance, we can look forward to even more possibilities in the future of phone form factors.
