Recent certification information has shown that the entire iPhone 16 lineup will offer a maximum charging power of 15V/3A, a significant increase compared to the previous 30W fast charging support. However, the actual performance may disappoint. Early reviews from multiple institutions have shown that the iPhone 16 Pro Max only reaches a peak charging power of 39W for a very short time, briefly maintaining 33W charging power at low battery levels, for a total of about 10 minutes. Compared to the total charging time of 105 minutes, this improvement is negligible.
For most of the charging time, the iPhone 16 Pro Max charges at less than 27W, meaning there is no substantial charging speed improvement compared to the previous generation's 30W fast charging. Compared to Android high-end phones with fast charging speeds often exceeding 100 watts, Apple's charging speed pales in comparison. The charging time of over 100 minutes is enough to charge an Android phone twice.
The reason for this is that Apple has not upgraded the charging hardware in the iPhone 16 series, only opening up support for some new protocols for compatibility. This approach has not achieved the performance specified on paper, and the actual experience is not consistent with expectations.
Nevertheless, this might be good news for regular users, as they can continue using their previous chargers without having to purchase expensive 45W chargers for a negligible increase in charging power.
