In 2007, Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone at an Apple event, a product that revolutionized the mobile phone market. With its touchscreen ecosystem, powerful hardware configuration, and design surpassing its contemporaries, the iPhone quickly became synonymous with high-end smartphones and solidified its position in the premium market with year-on-year sales growth. Particularly in terms of performance, there has always been a saying that "Apple's self-developed chips are ahead of Android flagship chips by two whole years." The iPhone, with its remarkable hardware and software experience, has been a benchmark product in the smartphone market for years.

After 17 years, the iPhone 16 series has finally been released. While expectations were high, the iPhone 16 standard version feels unremarkable this year. Features like high refresh rates and AOD are still absent, and the previously leaked 256GB starting storage and 40W charging have not materialized. The only positive is the upgrade to the A18 chip. As Apple's first iPhone chip designed specifically for AI, the A18 has a significantly different architecture compared to its predecessors. However, in the domestic market where AppleIntelligence cannot be used in the short term, many users are likely more concerned with the specific performance improvements of the A18 chip over its predecessor and how it compares to similarly positioned Android flagships. With the iPhone 16 series officially launched, let's delve into the performance of this iPhone "heart" that Apple holds high hopes for.

Prior to the iPhone 16 series, Apple employed different chip generations between the standard and Pro versions for two consecutive generations. Two years ago, the iPhone 14 series was the first to equip the standard and Pro versions with A15 and A16 chips respectively, a move that amazed many. The iPhone 15 series took this further, with the standard version featuring the A16 chip and the Pro version upgraded to the A17Pro chip.

To enable AppleIntelligence support across the entire iPhone 16 lineup, Apple adjusted its chip strategy once again. After two years, iPhone has returned to the design of using the same generation of chips for standard and Pro versions, namely the A18 and A18Pro chips. The only difference between the two lies in their GPUs, with the A18 featuring a 5-core GPU and the A18Pro featuring a 6-core GPU. The good news is that the standard version finally gets a new chip.

Specifically, the iPhone 16 we have in hand is equipped with a brand new A18 chip. The CPU employs a six-core architecture, with two performance cores and four efficiency cores. Performance-wise, compared to the iPhone 15's A16 chip, the A18 delivers a 30% improvement and a 30% reduction in power consumption. Compared to the A15 chips in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13, the CPU performance enhancement is an impressive 50%.

Next, we conducted a series of tests, starting with Geekbench 6. In the CPU portion, the A18 scored 3252 in single-core and 7947 in multi-core. Compared to the A18Pro, the A18's single-core performance dropped by about 4%, and the multi-core performance dropped by about 4%, a very small gap. It's highly likely that the A18Pro's CPU merely has a slightly higher clock speed than the A18.

With such a significant improvement, we naturally need to compare the A18 against the A17Pro, Snapdragon 8Gen3, and Dimensity 9300+. Compared to its predecessor, the A18 boasts a 16% single-core and 6% multi-core improvement. Against the Snapdragon 8Gen3, the A18 outperforms by 42% in single-core and 7% in multi-core. Compared to the Dimensity 9300+, the gap narrows to a 37% lead in single-core and 1% lead in multi-core performance.

As for the A16? Compared to the A18, it simply isn't in the same league, it gets absolutely crushed.

Next, we conducted 3DMark testing. In the WlidLifeExtreme test, the iPhone 16 achieved a score of 4019. In contrast, the A17Pro scored 4266, the Snapdragon 8Gen3 scored 4870, the Snapdragon 8Gen3 leading version with active cooling scored 5514, and the Dimensity 9300+ scored 5215.

In the SolarBay test across universal platforms, the iPhone 16 achieved a score of 6808. By comparison, the A17Pro scored 6570, the Snapdragon 8Gen3 scored 8979, the Snapdragon 8Gen3 leading version with active cooling scored 9276, and the Dimensity 9300+ scored 8288.

It's evident that with one less core, the A18 chip's graphics performance is slightly behind last year's A17Pro. Even the full-fledged A18Pro's graphics performance only matches the A17Pro.

Finally, we conducted the AnTuTu benchmark, and the iPhone 16 achieved a comprehensive score of 1.54 million, with the CPU scoring 420,000 and the GPU scoring 570,000. In comparison, the iPhone 15 scored 1.33 million, while the iPhone 15Pro sits around 1.5 million.

While AnTuTu scores are mainly for fun, they still demonstrate a clear performance improvement. The iPhone 16 shows notable enhancements in gaming, which is evident to the naked eye. So, how does the A18 fare in actual gaming experiences?

Gaming Experience: Smooth Gameplay, Handles Heavy Games Effortlessly

To test the A18's gaming performance, we chose three demanding games: "Sparkling With You," "Asphalt 9: Legends," and "Honkai: Star Rail." As for lighter games like "League of Legends: Wild Rift" and "PUBG Mobile," there is no need for testing, as their smoothness is unquestionable.

First, we have "Sparkling With You," widely recognized as a performance killer in the gaming community this year. Running at high graphics setting with 60fps, we played through about 15 minutes of "Sparkling With You" gameplay. The average frame rate was 58FPS, with only the cutscenes locked at 30fps. Whether it's exploring the city, utilizing the grappling hook for fast movement, or engaging in battles in the open world, the experience is very satisfying.

Next, we have "Asphalt 9: Legends," the representative of racing games. Running at the highest graphics setting with 60fps, we played approximately 3-4 rounds of "Asphalt 9: Legends" ranked matches. The iPhone 16 achieved an average frame rate of 59FPS throughout, delivering a smooth and silky experience.

Lastly, we have "Honkai: Star Rail," a new title from miHoYo with extremely high performance demands. Running at high graphics setting with 60fps, we played about 15 minutes of "Honkai: Star Rail" exploration. The iPhone 16 averaged 57FPS, with the frame rate curve steadily dropping due to heat generation. However, for an RPG game, it still runs smoothly.

Real-world testing confirms that even for highly demanding mobile games, the iPhone 16 handles them effortlessly. Its performance in sandbox games like "Sparkling With You" even surpasses that of ordinary Android flagships, leading one to question whether it has undergone specific optimization.

Regarding heat dissipation, the iPhone 16 we tested reached a maximum temperature of 33.7C on the screen, 37.4C on the back, and 32.6C on the frame during normal standby mode. After game testing, the maximum temperatures reached 42.2C on the screen, 44.8C on the back, and 39.7C on the frame, which is quite decent.

It's important to note that the only shortcoming is still the 60Hz refresh rate screen. Standard version users are destined to miss out on high-refresh rate gaming experiences.

Conclusion: Significant Performance Upgrade, iPhone 16 is Worth Buying

Returning to the same generation chip after a long wait, the iPhone 16 delivers a satisfactory performance score. Thanks to the synchronous update in product manufacturing processes and architecture, the A18 chip's CPU performance is exceptionally impressive, with practically only frequency differences between it and the A18Pro. It sits firmly in the top tier of mobile devices today. As for the GPU, while it lacks one core, the benchmark scores are still commendable. Coupled with the new heat dissipation design, the experience in 3A mobile games reaches an outstanding level.
