iPhone 16 Series Wi-Fi 7 Upgrade: Speed Falls Short of Expectations
Apple has updated its official support page, confirming that the entire iPhone 16 series supports 160MHz Wi-Fi 7 networks, aligning with the iPhone 15 Pro series that supports Wi-Fi 6E (the base iPhone 15 model only supports 80MHz). However, tests conducted by French tech media outlet LesNumeriques show that despite the upgrade to Wi-Fi 7, the iPhone 16 series wireless speeds are still on par with the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
According to Apple's official information, the iPhone 16 series supports 160MHz Wi-Fi 7 networks, theoretically enabling faster network speeds. However, LesNumeriques test results diverged from expectations. In real-world testing, the iPhone 16 Plus and 16 Pro struggled to exceed download and upload speeds of 1.6Gb/s, essentially matching the performance of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
To rule out router performance limitations, LesNumeriques also tested using an Asus ZenBookS14 laptop on the same network conditions. The laptop achieved download and upload speeds of 4Gbps, demonstrating that the router was capable of higher throughput.
This test result has raised questions about the iPhone 16 series Wi-Fi 7 upgrade. Although Apple hasn't provided a detailed explanation, industry experts speculate that the internal chipset or software optimization of the iPhone 16 series may not be fully compatible with the Wi-Fi 7 standard, resulting in limited speed improvement.
It's important to note that the above specifications are based on the US version of the iPhone. Apple's Wi-Fi 6E is not available in mainland China, and while Wi-Fi 7 is available, it does not support the 6GHz band. Therefore, users in mainland China might not be able to experience the full capabilities of Wi-Fi 7 when using the iPhone 16 series.
Although the iPhone 16 series falls short of expectations in terms of Wi-Fi 7 speeds, it remains one of the few smartphones on the market with Wi-Fi 7 support. As technology advances and software optimizes, the iPhone 16 series is expected to fully unleash the performance potential of Wi-Fi 7, delivering faster wireless network experiences for users.
