Apple is set to launch the fourth generation of its budget iPhone SE, with the device expected to launch in Spring 2025. The iPhone SE4 will mark a significant departure from previous generations, introducing features seen in higher-end iPhones while maintaining its position as the most affordable model in Apples lineup.
Recent reports suggest that the iPhone SE4 will feature a design similar to the iPhone 14, with a larger 6.1-inch OLED display, a significant upgrade from the current model's 4.7-inch LCD screen. The shift to an OLED display is part of Apple's strategy to gradually phase out LCD displays across its entire iPhone product line, significantly impacting suppliers like JDI and Sharp, who have long provided LCD panels for the SE model.
On the performance front, the iPhone SE4 will be powered by the A18 chip, which debuted last month with the iPhone 16 series lineup. Along with the performance enhancements, the iPhone SE4 will also transition from TouchID to FaceID, marking the end of the physical Home button on iPhones.
Beyond the bigger screen and more powerful processor, the iPhone SE4 is expected to receive other notable upgrades, including:
- USB-C port: Replacing the Lightning connector, bringing it in line with Apples other new models.
- Action button: A new feature introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro that provides users with an additional way to interact with their device.
- Apple-designed 5G modem: For even better network connectivity performance.
- 48MP rear camera: Up from the current 12MP sensor, delivering higher quality images.
- 8GB RAM: Twice the amount of memory found in the current model to support upcoming AI features in iOS 18.1.
The increase in memory is significant for the iPhone SE4 as it will enable the device to run Apples AI (Apple Intelligence) features, expected to be introduced in iOS 18.1 later this month. This will make the SE4 the most affordable iPhone capable of running these advanced AI features, even surpassing the standard iPhone 15 from last year.
Despite these substantial upgrades, Apple is expected to maintain the iPhone SE's position as a budget-friendly option. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has indicated that the device could be priced between $400 and $500, staying in line with previous iterations. As for the release date, multiple sources, including Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, have pointed to a Spring 2025 launch. Given that all previous iPhone SE models launched in March, a March 2025 release seems highly likely. Apple suppliers are reportedly gearing up for mass production in October this year, setting the stage for an early 2025 launch.
The launch of the iPhone SE4 signifies Apple bringing high-end features down to the lower end of the market, offering a more powerful option for budget-conscious users. With the addition of more powerful AI features, along with the hardware upgrades that bring it in line with Apple's other most recent models, the iPhone SE4 is poised to once again become one of the most popular smartphones on the market.
