Google Pixel 9a Leaks: New Colorways, Slimmer Design, and Tensor G4 Processor
Following the launch of the Pixel 9 series in August, news about the Pixel 9a has started to surface. According to the latest information, the Google Pixel 9a will undergo a complete makeover in terms of design, particularly regarding color options and the camera module.
It is reported that the Google Pixel 9a will be available in four colorways: in addition to the traditional white and black, two new colors have been added Peony Pink and Iris Purple, replacing the previous Aloe Green and Bay Blue. The pink colorway is reminiscent of the base Pixel 9, while the purple shade is said to be inspired by the iris flower. These two new additions offer consumers more personalization options and bring a fresh feel to the device.
Renderings reveal that the Google Pixel 9a adopts a rectangular design, with a camera module that is nearly flush with the back, featuring a slight bump. The LED flash is positioned on the right side of the entire lens module. The front design aligns with the Pixel 9 series, sporting a centered punch-hole display. The Pixel 9a is expected to have an aluminum frame with a matte finish. Compared to its predecessor, the new model will be slightly thicker but will likely employ equal-width rounded corners, resulting in a more balanced overall visual effect. Additionally, the SIM slot, USB-C port, and speaker are located at the bottom of the device.
While Google has yet to officially disclose the Pixel 9a's specifications, leaks suggest that it will feature a 6.1-inch display, the same as the Pixel 8a. However, the device will be thinner at 8.5mm compared to the Pixel 8a's 8.9mm. Additionally, the Pixel 9a's length and width are estimated to be 154mm x 73mm, about 2mm longer and 1mm wider than the Pixel 8a.
A slimmer and lighter design not only enhances portability and grip but also hints at an increased battery capacity compared to the Pixel 8a's 4492mAh. This indicates that the new model will likely have a smaller and thinner battery while offering improved battery life. Achieving a slimmer design without compromising battery life might require advancements in battery technology.
In terms of performance, the Pixel 9a is expected to be powered by the Google Tensor G4 processor, offering 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, running on Android 15. As a reference, the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro feature 6.3-inch panels, with the Pixel 9 Pro utilizing a higher-spec LTPO screen. The Pixel 9 Pro XL boasts a 6.8-inch display. The starting RAM capacity is 12GB, while the two Pro phones offer 16GB of RAM.
On the imaging front, all three new models are equipped with a 50MP wide-angle lens and a 48MP ultrawide lens. The Pro versions add a 48MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom and 30x super-resolution digital zoom.
Regarding Google's heavily publicized AI features, Gemini Live enables more natural conversations with AI assistants. The Pixel Screenshots app leverages Gemini Nano to analyze and organize content from phone screenshots, allowing for integration with applications like Calendar. Pixel Studio's image generation software, based on on-device models and the cloud-based Imagen 3 text-to-image model, will be pre-installed on the new phones. Additionally, Google has released an AI group photo feature called 'AddMe,' allowing users to take separate photos while on a trip and then integrate them into one image using AI, eliminating the need for a tripod or assistance from strangers.
Following Google's usual new phone release pattern, the Pixel 9a is expected to launch at Google I/O in May 2025. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new device.
