India's Ambitious Semiconductor Dream: TATA, Micron and Other Giants Join Forces to Drive Progress, Apple iPhone Production Expands
India's Commerce Minister, Piyush Goyal, recently expressed strong confidence in India's progress in chip manufacturing and Apple iPhone production during an interview in New York. He stated that Indian giant TATA and other domestic companies are actively driving India's semiconductor dream into reality, with significant results already achieved. Goyal revealed that he maintains close contact with Micron's CEO and is satisfied with the progress Micron is making in India. He emphasized that while building a semiconductor industry is not easy, India possesses abundant talent and skills. During a recent trip to Silicon Valley, Goyal visited several US semiconductor companies and observed a significant number of Indians in their factories and management teams, reinforcing his confidence in India's semiconductor development. He anticipates that India will deliver its first batch of chips by 2026-2027.
Beyond the semiconductor sector, India has also made significant advancements in Apple iPhone production. Goyal revealed that currently 14% of global Apple iPhones are manufactured in India, a number expected to grow further. Apple has been consistently expanding its phone assembly operations in India over the past two years, simultaneously expanding its retail presence and attracting new iPhone buyers. Goyal highlighted the growing demand for more expensive iPhone models among Indian customers, with Apple starting to produce other products in the country, including iPads, AirPods, and Apple Watches.
As India actively enters the semiconductor arena, more US chip manufacturers are turning their attention to India. Leading US companies such as Nvidia, AMD, and Micron have already committed to expanding in India. This signifies that India is becoming a key player in the global semiconductor industry, with promising prospects for its future development.
