According to the supply chain publication DigiTimes, Taiwanese chipmaker Novatek has announced plans to begin mass production of OLED displays featuring TDDI (touch and display driver integration) technology as early as the second quarter of 2025. The report suggests that Apple "could be" among its first customers, though this seems speculative.

The report states: "While industry insiders remain tight-lipped about potential end customers, speculation suggests that Novatek's proposed shipment timeline could coincide with the next-generation iPhone displays in 2025. If this speculation proves accurate, at least some iPhone 17 models could adopt this technology next year."

Given that TDDI technology integrates the touch layer and display driver layer, resulting in thinner OLED displays for Apple devices, the technology appears particularly suited for the rumored ultra-thin "iPhone 17 Air." Whether Apple will actually adopt this technology remains to be seen.

The report further speculates that Apple might first use it in products with lower production volumes than the iPhone, such as future iPad and Apple Watch models, and the technology could also be suitable for the rumored foldable iPhone or iPad.

Novatek's TDDI OLED display technology promises thinner, lighter designs for Apple products and could potentially enhance display performance and user experience. However, it remains uncertain whether Apple will ultimately embrace this technology and on which products it might be implemented.
