According to a recent blog post from market research firm CIRP, 41% of iPhone users in the United States choose to sell or trade in their old phones, compared to just 17% of Android users. This data suggests that Apple's used iPhones hold a higher market value, leading users to favor selling or trading in their old devices.
The report analyzed three main ways users dispose of their old phones: keeping, selling/trading in, and other disposition methods. "Keeping" refers to giving the old phone to friends or family or using it as a backup; "selling/trading in" involves selling or trading in the device through Apple, carriers, or third-party marketplaces; and "other disposition methods" include losing, stolen, damaged, recycling, or donating the phone.
The data reveals that over half (53%) of Android users choose to keep their old phones, either for family members or as backups, exceeding the 40% retention rate of iPhone users. For iPhone users, selling or trading in has become the more prevalent choice.
This finding aligns closely with the well-established trade-in program offered by Apple in the United States. Apple's trade-in service allows users to exchange their old iPhones for a new iPhone, receiving corresponding discounts or credits, offering a convenient and attractive option.
On the other hand, used iPhones command higher market value compared to Android phones. In recent years, Apple's brand value and product performance have both seen improvements, making used iPhones remain highly sought after in the market. This is also a contributing factor to iPhone users' preference for selling or trading in their old phones instead of keeping them.
Overall, CIRP's report indicates that Apple's used iPhones have a higher market value, and Apple's robust trade-in service provides iPhone users with a more convenient and cost-effective way to dispose of their old phones. This might explain why more iPhone users opt to sell or trade in their old iPhones.
