The Meta Quest 3S is an affordable VR headset that shares many similarities with the Meta Quest 2, but boasts more powerful performance and color passthrough capabilities. A recent teardown video from iFixit reveals that the Meta Quest 3S shares a very similar internal design to the Quest 2. Both headsets employ the same Fresnel lenses and feature identical IPD adjustment mechanisms. Additionally, they utilize the same single LCD panel, instead of one panel per eye like the Meta Quest 3.
Despite sharing many of the same components as the Quest 2, the Meta Quest 3S includes some significant improvements. For instance, the Meta Quest 3S utilizes two infrared sensors for depth mapping instead of a single depth sensor, making it perform better in low-light conditions. Moreover, the Quest 3S also features the same Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 SoC as the Quest 3 and is compatible with Meta's new Touch Plus controllers.
iFixit points out that these similarities are not a bad thing. Rather, they help keep the cost of the Quest 3S down. The Quest 3S retails for $299.99, compared to $499.99 for the Quest 3. Additionally, since the Quest 2 has been on the market for four years, replacement parts are readily available if any older components fail.
In the teardown video, iFixit also shows off other details of the Meta Quest 3S, such as the design of its battery, speakers, and headstrap.
