Apple Cuts iPhone 16 Standard Model Orders, iPhone 17 Air Coming Soon
According to the latest report from renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is expected to significantly cut orders for the iPhone 16 series starting in the fourth quarter, with an estimated reduction of 10 million units, primarily affecting the two standard models. This move will bring the total production capacity of the iPhone 16 series down to 84 million units.
Kuo previously pointed out that the initial sales performance of the iPhone 16 series was not ideal, with pre-orders for the first weekend reaching about 37 million units, a decline of 12.7% compared to the iPhone 15 series in the same period last year. Among the four models, the Pro version performed relatively well, with domestic sales increasing by 44% year-on-year. Currently, Pro models still require a delay in delivery on Apple's official website.
Conversely, the two standard models have experienced sluggish sales. They were available for purchase at launch through official channels and overall sales were below expectations. It is precisely due to the weak demand for the standard models that Apple decided to make significant cuts to orders.
Despite the large order cuts, it is not expected to have a major impact on Apple's mobile business revenue in 2024. The key determinant of the performance of the mobile business lies in the two Pro models. Apple prioritized the production of the Pro versions in the initial stages of the iPhone 16 series production and produced more iPhone 16 Pro Max units between September and October to ensure sufficient supply of Pro models in the fourth quarter.
In response to the lackluster performance of the standard models, Apple is expected to make adjustments in the next generation iPhone 17 series. It is rumored that the Plus version will be discontinued and replaced with a brand new phone called the iPhone 17 Air.
The iPhone 17 Air is targeted at users who do not require the performance, screen size, or camera capabilities of the Pro version and positions itself as a more "stylish" design. The phone will feature a completely different design from existing models, boasting a slimmer profile. In terms of specifications, the iPhone 17 Air will be positioned below the Pro versions, equipped with the new A19 processor and Apple's self-developed 5G modem.
Overall, Apple's decision to cut orders for the iPhone 16 standard models reflects its judgment of market demand. The upcoming iPhone 17 Air showcases Apple's new strategy in the mid-range market, aiming to attract more consumers through a more appealing design and a more affordable price.
