Over 3700 Apps Still Not 64-bit Compatible! Gold Standard Alliance Releases List of Unadapted Apps, 32-bit Apps Facing Elimination
The Mobile Intelligent Terminal Ecosystem Alliance (formerly the Gold Standard Alliance) issued an announcement yesterday, revealing a list of apps that were still not 64-bit compatible as of October 2024. This includes important applications like the General Administration of Sport of China, the nationwide 12315 platform, and the Yingstone Cloud Video HD. Although the four software stores of Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, and Lenovo have achieved over 99.6% full adaptation, as of October 25th, there are still over 3700 (99% of which are not available in stores) key apps impacting users' daily lives that haven't completed 64-bit adaptation, a decrease of 200+ compared to last month.
IT Home noticed that Arm architecture CPU cores have been mandatorily using 64-bit since 2023, with 32-bit instructions gradually being phased out. In 2024, Google imposed restrictions on 32-bit apps in Android 15, meaning that new devices equipped with Android 15 starting from September 2024 will be unable to install or use 32-bit apps. This is an insurmountable obstacle for apps that haven't yet adapted to 64-bit.
Currently, the Gold Standard Alliance members OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi, and Lenovo have begun gradually clearing 32-bit apps from their stores. In the future, they will implement measures such as risk warnings for unavailable 32-bit apps. This aims to guide developers to actively undertake 64-bit adaptation, ensuring users can continue to use applications normally in the future.
It's worth noting that while 64-bit applications offer advantages in terms of performance and security compared to 32-bit ones, some developers and users still have questions and concerns. For instance, some developers worry about the high adaptation costs, while some users are concerned that their familiar 32-bit apps may no longer be usable. Therefore, the Gold Standard Alliance and phone manufacturers need to engage in more effective communication with developers and users to help them better understand the necessity and importance of 64-bit adaptation.
Overall, 64-bit adaptation is the inevitable trend and the future direction of mobile application development. The active efforts of the Gold Standard Alliance and phone manufacturers will effectively accelerate this process, providing users with a safer and more convenient mobile application experience. Meanwhile, developers also need to actively respond and complete 64-bit adaptation as soon as possible to ensure their applications can continue to maintain their competitiveness in the future market.
