Apple iPhone 16 Banned from Sale in Indonesia: Personal Import Allowed, Commercial Sales Not
Indonesia's Ministry of Industry recently announced that while Apple has not yet met the local investment requirements to sell the iPhone 16 in Indonesia, travelers are allowed to bring the device into the country for personal use.
According to the Jakarta Globe, iPhones 16 brought in for personal use or via courier services are allowed entry into Indonesia. Febri Hendri Antoni Arif, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry, stated in a press release on October 26, "The iPhone 16 brought in by travelers and subject to taxes is considered personal property and is not allowed for sale. It is only for the traveler's personal use." Each traveler is allowed to bring in a maximum of two iPhone 16 devices. Approximately 9,000 iPhones 16 have reportedly entered Indonesia as personal luggage and paid taxes between August and October.
It's important to note that selling these phones within Indonesia would be considered illegal. Additionally, non-commercial iPhone 16 devices entering Indonesia through postal services are also permitted, as they are not subject to the local investment goals.
As reported by the Jakarta Post, Indonesia's Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, stated on October 22 that Apple has yet to fulfill its commitment to investing 1.71 trillion Indonesian Rupiah (approximately 780 million yuan), a condition for obtaining a sales license in the country. Agus indicated that Apple has invested 1.48 trillion Indonesian Rupiah so far.
Apple issued a statement on October 11, stating, "We are deeply committed to the Indonesian market and look forward to bringing all our latest products, including the iPhone 16 series, to our customers as soon as possible."
At present, Apple has not provided any further response to this matter.
