iPhone 16 Pro Shipping Times Shorten, JPMorgan: Demand Similar to iPhone 15
Investment bank JPMorgan says that despite demand for the iPhone 16 series being broadly similar to the iPhone 15, shipping times for Pro models are shortening. While Apple doesn't disclose details of its iPhone production numbers, nor break it down by model, JPMorgan analyzes shipping times to glean insights.
JPMorgan's analysts had previously noted that iPhone 16 Pro Max deliveries have been consistently high, but other models shipping times were similar to the iPhone 15 series. In a note to investors, JPMorgan says that there has been a "modest improvement" in the shipping cycle across all iPhone 16 models, but "the decline is more pronounced for the Pro models," leading to a slight overall improvement compared to the same time in 2023.
JPMorgan concludes that while demand for the iPhone 15 series is slightly lower than the iPhone 15, it remains resilient. This contradicts recent reports that claim demand for the iPhone 16 series is weak.
JPMorgans latest tracking data shows that globally, the iPhone 16 Pro Max now has an average shipping time of 17 days, compared to 19 days for the iPhone 15 Pro Max at the same time last year. In the U.S., JPMorgan observed a pronounced shortening of delivery times in its last week of tracking. Its sixth-week report shows a 15-day shipping timeframe for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, compared to 21 days at the same time in 2023.
China and Europe also show a similar trend, with the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus experiencing stable delivery times, while the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max saw shortened delivery times by about 5 days.
It's worth noting that JPMorgan had previously predicted that AppleIntelligence would drive iPhone 16 sales, potentially leading to shipping delays. However, JPMorgan noted in late October 2024 that the expected sales surge had not materialized.
In sum, JPMorgan's analysis suggests that while overall demand for the iPhone 16 series is similar to the iPhone 15, demand for the Pro models, particularly the iPhone 16 Pro Max, remains robust, leading to shorter shipping times. This contrasts with some reports about weak demand for the iPhone 16 series.
