The Smartphone Market Rebounds, Eight Chinese Brands Vie for Dominance, Can Xiaomi Challenge Samsung and Apple?
According to the latest data from research firm TechInsights, global smartphone shipments grew by 3.8% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2024, reaching 307.7 million units. This marks the fourth consecutive quarter of recovery for the smartphone market. While growth momentum has slowed, it still signals a rebound in the market.
In terms of brands, Samsung holds the top spot in the global smartphone market with nearly 19% market share, followed closely by Apple with a 17% market share. Xiaomi, OPPO (including OnePlus), and vivo occupy the remaining top five positions, followed by Transsion, Lenovo-Motorola, Honor, Realme, and Huawei.
It's noteworthy that eight of the top ten smartphone manufacturers globally are Chinese, surpassing both South Korea and the United States. This demonstrates the rising influence of Chinese smartphone manufacturers in the global market.
However, the strong performance of Samsung and Apple should not be underestimated. Currently, only Xiaomi among Chinese brands has the potential to challenge Samsung and Apple. Previously, Xiaomi briefly surpassed Apple to secure the second position globally. Whether it can achieve long-term leadership remains to be seen.
Besides Xiaomi, vivo and Huawei have also shown rapid progress. vivo has topped the charts in both the Chinese and Indian markets for two consecutive quarters, and has achieved strong growth in several emerging markets in the Asia Pacific region (such as Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines), with shipments increasing by 25% year-over-year, securing the fifth position and displacing Transsion from the top five.
Despite ranking tenth, Huawei still achieved a 15% increase following significant growth in previous quarters. TechInsights states that Huawei's return to the 5G field will continue to reshape the Chinese and global smartphone market in 2025 and beyond.
Overall, the global smartphone market is gradually recovering, and the rise of Chinese smartphone manufacturers is undeniable. In the future, who will become the market leader, who will drive technological innovation, let's wait and see.
