As the world's largest provider of NAND flash memory, Samsung has formulated a grand plan for the development of its V-NAND technology. Recently, Samsung shared the latest development status of V-NAND technology and reiterated that it will start producing products with the 9th generation V-NAND technology early next year, which will exceed 300 layers and continue to use a dual stack architecture, with the highest number of layers in the industry.

The so-called dual stack architecture refers to the production of a 3DNAND flash memory stack on a 300mm wafer, and then building another stack on top of the original one. Samsung first introduced this technology in 2020. The 9th generation V-NAND technology with over 300 layers will increase the storage density of 300mm wafer production, allowing manufacturers to produce lower cost solid-state drives or make solid-state drives with the same storage density and performance cheaper. Previously, SK Hynix showcased the world's first 321 layer NAND flash memory, becoming the industry's first company to develop over 300 layers of NAND flash memory. I don't know how many layers Samsung can achieve.

In addition to improving storage density, the performance of the new 3DNAND flash memory chip will also be improved. Samsung stated that it is committed to developing the next generation of new technologies that create value, including a new structure that maximizes the input/output (I/O) speed of 3DNAND flash memory. It is expected that Samsung will bring a successor to the 990Pro series, a new generation flagship SSD with PCIe 5.0 interface.

It is understood that Samsung may introduce a three stack architecture on the 10th generation V-NAND technology to ensure production, with a layer count of 430. This means increasing the use of raw materials and increasing the cost of each 3DNAND wafer. Last year, Samsung's long-term vision proposed at "Samsung Tech Day 2022" was to increase the number of floors to 1000 by 2030.
