Apple and Samsung Dominate, Xiaomi Makes a Splash: Global Smartphone Market Q2 Review

According to the latest data from Counterpoint Research, the global smartphone market in Q2 2024 continued to be dominated by Apple and Samsung. However, Xiaomi's impressive performance propelled it into the top 10 best-selling models list, demonstrating its growing competitive strength.

Apple: iPhone 15 Series Leads, Plus Model Absent

Apple and Samsung Dominate, Xiaomi Makes a Splash: Global Smartphone Market Q2 Review

The newly released iPhone 15 series unsurprisingly became the best-selling models in Q2. The iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 15 Pro accounted for 10.9% of global sales, while the previous generation iPhone 14 contributed 1.6% of sales. Notably, the iPhone 15 Plus was absent from the top 10 list, which may be a factor in Apple's decision to eventually discontinue the Plus model.

Samsung: Low-End Models Sell Well, Flagship S24 Ultra Underperforms

Samsung saw a relatively stable performance in Q2, but its best-selling models were primarily in the low-end Galaxy A series, such as the Galaxy A15, A55, and A05. The flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra, despite achieving a 1.4% share and placing ninth, did not stand out. This might be attributed to its early January release, missing the peak sales period of Q2.

Xiaomi: 13C 4G Emerges, Demonstrating Continued 4G Demand

Xiaomi achieved remarkable results in Q2. The Xiaomi 13C 4G secured a spot in the top 10 with 1.5% of sales. Additionally, Samsung also featured a 4G phone in the top 10 list. This indicates that despite the accelerated adoption of 5G phones, 4G phones still hold a stable market demand in certain regions, such as China, North America, and beyond Europe.

High-End Share Declines, Competition Intensifies

While the Q2 top 10 list featured five high-end smartphones, their combined share declined by 1.5%. Besides the underperforming Galaxy S24 Ultra, the iPhone 15 series' sluggish sales in the Chinese market also contributed to this phenomenon.

Overall, the global smartphone market witnessed intensifying competition in Q2. Apple and Samsung maintain their leading positions, but other brands like Xiaomi are steadily rising, injecting fresh energy into the market. Looking forward, the smartphone market will continue its trajectory towards 5G and intelligent features. The key to future competitiveness will lie in seizing opportunities and winning consumer favor.
