Southeast Asian Smartphone Market Recovers, Samsung Regains Top Spot with Slight Growth
According to data released by market research firm Canalys, smartphone shipments in Southeast Asia grew 14% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2024, reaching 23.9 million units, indicating a recovery in the market. After seven consecutive quarters of decline, Samsung finally saw a slight increase, shipping 4.4 million units, capturing an 18% market share and reclaiming the top spot.
OPPO (excluding OnePlus) performed strongly, returning to second place with 4.2 million units shipped, representing a 17% market share. Xiaomi came in third, narrowing the gap with its push towards entry-level products, shipping 4 million units, also capturing a 17% market share. Vivo returned to fourth place, shipping 3.4 million units, securing a 14% market share.
Following a significant surge in shipments in the first quarter, Transsion saw a slowdown in the second quarter, taking fifth place with 3.3 million units shipped, representing a 14% market share.
Samsung's slight growth was mainly attributed to its continued popularity of high-end models in the Southeast Asian market and its persistent investment in entry-level products in the mid-to-low-end segment. OPPO's steady market share growth was driven by its competitive offerings in the mid-range segment and its strong channel advantages. Xiaomi continued to leverage its cost-effectiveness advantage, achieving strong results in the entry-level market.
Vivo's comeback was due to product updates in the mid-range market and strategic adjustments in its distribution channels. While Transsion experienced a slowdown in the second quarter, its accumulated experience and advantage in the African market, along with its competitive entry-level offerings, allowed it to maintain a certain market share in Southeast Asia.
Overall, the Southeast Asian smartphone market demonstrated a strong growth trend in the second quarter of 2024, with intensified competition among major brands. The future development of the Southeast Asian smartphone market will be influenced by a variety of factors, including economic growth, consumer demand, and competitive landscape. It is expected that the Southeast Asian smartphone market will continue to grow in the next few years, but competition will be more intense, and the rivalry between brands will be even more exciting.
