Current small foldable phones on the market almost universally rely on speakerphone for calls when closed, offering no guarantee of communication privacy. Xiaomi MIX Flip, however, tackles this issue by innovating signal and audio transmission, enabling in-ear calls even when the phone is closed for the first time. Xiaomi's official Weibo account recently released a post explaining the technology behind this achievement in detail.

In terms of signal, small foldable phones exhibit comparable antenna layout and performance to conventional smartphones when unfolded. However, when closed, antennas overlap and interfere, while hand-holding also reduces usable radiation area, leading to a higher probability of "dead zones" compared to the unfolded state. Xiaomi MIX Flip overcomes these challenges with four low-frequency antennas ensuring smooth communication even in weak signal environments like rural areas. The hero antenna, a high-frequency antenna located at the top, works in tandem with Xiaomi's Surge T1 signal enhancement chip, resulting in better signal performance. Moreover, Xiaomi HyperOS' network subsystem intelligently selects the best antenna based on the user's grip and optimizes network cell selection based on usage habits, ensuring seamless signal connectivity in both open and closed states through a combination of hardware and software.

Regarding the earpiece, the limited internal space of small foldables often restricts the design to accommodate only the unfolded state, placing the earpiece on the inner screen side. This arrangement results in the earpiece being blocked when closed, forcing calls to be conducted through the bottom speaker. Xiaomi MIX Flip takes the lead by introducing a dual-diaphragm dipole speaker into the small foldable form factor, equipping a set of diaphragms for the earpiece on both the inner and outer screens, enabling in-ear calls both when open and closed. Xiaomi MIX Flip further leverages the "opposite phase cancellation" physical property of the dipole speaker system to prevent call audio from leaking outwards in both open and closed states, guaranteeing call privacy.

Furthermore, when small foldable phones are closed, the two microphones are positioned side-by-side, affecting sound pickup and noise reduction, ultimately impacting call quality. Xiaomi MIX Flip addresses this issue by adding a separate microphone in the hinge area, complementing the independent earpiece at the top. This arrangement, along with the top microphone, creates a new microphone combination, ensuring clear sound pickup.

Through these innovative technologies and structural designs, Xiaomi MIX Flip successfully achieves in-ear calls even when closed.
