In the second quarter of 2024, Africa's smartphone market continued its growth trajectory, recording a year-on-year increase of 6% to reach 17.8 million units. The latest report from market research firm Canalys reveals that Transsion brand maintained its top spot with a 51% market share, although growth slowed to 1%, resulting in 9.2 million units shipped. Samsung, due to decreased focus on entry-level models, experienced a 25% year-on-year decline in shipments, reaching 3.3 million units, securing a 19% market share and placing second.

It's noteworthy that Xiaomi demonstrated a powerful presence in the African market, defying the trend with a 45% growth in shipments, reaching 2.1 million units, capturing a 12% market share and setting a record for the region. Realme, with an impressive 137% growth rate, secured fourth place, achieving 900,000 units shipped despite a 5% market share. OPPO, leveraging its expanded Reno series and focus on innovation, garnered significant consumer appeal, achieving a 39% year-on-year growth with 800,000 units shipped and a 4% market share, ranking fifth.

Despite the swift growth in Africa's smartphone market, feature phones still command over half of the market share. Canalys Senior Analyst Manish Pravinkumar highlights that the smartphone market in Africa holds significant potential for growth, but effectively tapping into this potential requires addressing broader challenges like consumer willingness to pay, digital literacy, high taxes on devices, and currency fluctuations.

 Africa

Transsion has held the leading position in the African market for a long time. Its strategy of focusing on low prices and customized products tailored to local market demands has resonated with African consumers. In recent years, Transsion has consistently upgraded its products and driven technological innovation, offering users more diverse choices. With Africa's continuous economic growth and the widespread adoption of mobile internet, Transsion is poised to further solidify its market leadership.

Xiaomi's rise in the African market is attributed to its value-for-money proposition and constant product innovation. Xiaomi smartphones have garnered widespread recognition in the African market, meeting the needs of local users in terms of performance, design, and features. Xiaomi has also actively established a robust offline sales network in Africa, providing users with more convenient services.

Realme's rapid market penetration in Africa is fueled by its youthful and stylish brand image and its high-value products. Realme smartphones prioritize thin designs, powerful performance, and fast charging capabilities, attracting a significant number of young users. Realme has also actively collaborated with local partners to conduct offline promotional campaigns, enhancing brand visibility.

OPPO's premium products and innovative technologies have earned recognition among high-end users in the African market. OPPO smartphones, boasting impressive camera capabilities, exquisite designs, and smooth system experiences, have won over users. OPPO has also collaborated with local operators to launch customized products and services, catering to the needs of local consumers.

Overall, Africa's smartphone market exhibits a promising growth trajectory and is expected to maintain its upward momentum in the future. As the local economy strengthens and mobile internet penetration expands, the African smartphone market will encounter even greater development opportunities. To succeed amidst intense competition, smartphone manufacturers must continuously innovate their products, enhance user experiences, and actively address market challenges.
