Google introduced USB-C display output support for the Pixel 8 series earlier this year via the Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 update, widely rolling it out in a June feature update. This allowed users to mirror their phone screen to external displays. However, the feature had some limitations. According to AndroidAuthority, Google has improved this feature on the Pixel 9 series; the new models natively support USB-C display output, eliminating the need for any dedicated hardware.

This means users can simply connect their Pixel 9 to an external monitor using a USB-C hub with an HDMI port. If your display supports USB-C input, you can directly connect your phone using a USB-C to USB-C cable. After connecting the Pixel 9 to an external display, a pop-up will appear on the phone asking "Mirror to external display?". Selecting the "Mirror display" button will immediately mirror your phone screen to the connected display. This feature works seamlessly on the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL.

It's noteworthy that while USB-C display output currently only supports screen mirroring, Google is developing an enhanced desktop mode, and USB-C display output support is a key feature for this mode to function properly. This suggests that Android 15 might enhance this feature, allowing users to experience a richer desktop experience on external displays in the future.

The Pixel 9 series' native USB-C display output support is a commendable improvement. This feature not only offers users greater convenience but also makes the Pixel 9 series more competitive within the multi-device ecosystem. With the upcoming release of Android 15, we anticipate seeing further refinements to this feature, ultimately leading to a more powerful desktop mode experience for users.
