Google Pixel 9 Series Processor Performance Lags Behind, Can Tensor G4 Support AI Ambitions?
Google's Pixel 9 series phones feature the new Gemini AI and are equipped with the semi-custom Tensor G4 processor. While Tensor G4 has improvements in AI and security, its traditional benchmark performance is underwhelming, placing it closer to mid-range chipsets compared to the latest flagship chips from Apple, MediaTek, and Qualcomm.
IT Home observed that the Pixel 9 series significantly lagged behind the Apple iPhone 15 and Samsung Galaxy S24 series in CPU tests on GeekBench 6 and PCMark. In GeekBench 6 tests, the Pixel 9 was 22% slower in the single-core test and 36% slower in the multi-core test compared to the Galaxy S24 powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The Pixel 9 also lagged behind the Galaxy S24 by 43% in PCMark, and its performance also showed a considerable gap from the Apple iPhone 15.
Furthermore, the Pixel 9 series' graphics performance falls behind its competitors. In the 3DMark WildLife Extreme test, the Pixel 9's graphics performance was 20% lower than the iPhone 15 and only half that of phones equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. However, Tensor G4 demonstrates relatively stable graphics performance under extended operation, which is a positive aspect.
Google has stated that they don't prioritize benchmark performance. However, reports suggest that Google's initial plans for Tensor G4 were more ambitious. However, due to time constraints, Google eventually adopted a "Zuma Pro" design based on Tensor G3. In the future, Google might utilize TSMC's manufacturing process to improve the performance and energy efficiency of Tensor G5.
Although Tensor G4 falls short in performance, Google has been diligently optimizing its AI capabilities. Gemini AI's powerful performance can compensate for some performance shortcomings, offering users a smarter and more convenient experience.
In summary, Tensor G4 excels in AI and security, but its traditional benchmark performance doesn't match up to other flagship chips. While Google doesn't prioritize benchmark performance, boosting Tensor processor performance will be crucial for gaining greater competitiveness in the high-end market going forward.
