Apple just announced that it will make adjustments to iOS and iPadOS by the end of the year, offering European Union users more options for changing default apps. These adjustments are being made by Apple to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to promote competition and provide users with more choices.

According to the announcement, EU users will be able to choose default apps for everything except Settings and Phone, including the App Store, Messages, Photos, Camera, and Safari. Apple has stated that it plans to create a dedicated space on iPhone to make it easier for users to change default apps.

This is not the first time Apple has offered default app change options for EU users. With the release of iOS 17.4 and later earlier this year, Apple already allowed EU users to choose their preferred app stores, email, browser, and NFC apps.

Apple also stated in the announcement that users will see default options for making phone calls, sending text messages, managing passwords, blocking spam calls, and keyboard input in later iOS and iPadOS updates this year. Additionally, Apple promises to provide default option support for navigation apps and translation apps by spring 2025.

These adjustments will give EU users more choice and flexibility, enabling them to select apps that best suit their needs and preferences. This will also further promote competition in the app market and bring more innovation for users.

Apple states that these changes will apply to all EU users running the latest versions of iOS and iPadOS. The company also emphasizes that these changes only apply to EU users and will not affect users in other regions.
